All Microcontrollers work on Clock Signal. The Clock Signal acts as a heart-bit for the Microcontroller. Every cycle of Clock signal synchronizes the execution of instruction. Most of the microcontroller uses crystal to generate the clock signal. Few microcontrollers have built-in timing circuit for clock generation.
